Spring-Summer Must Haves - - Girls 10-12

Both of my older daughters have Spring birthdays. This makes Spring, a time I am always looking for gift ideas and needs to get them through the summer.  Between the birthdays and Easter baskets, I try to take care of everything.  If your kiddos are anything like mine, by the time the weather warms up the shorts in their dressers are too short and their toes are squashed in their shoes.

I’ve put together a round up of great spring & summer wardrobe staples that I buy for my kids as well as things that they are going to need. We are a pretty active family. So my kids will be involved in sports camps throughout summer, so a lot of my picks are sports friendly, cool & wicking clothing for our hot summers in Georgia.

Most of the clothing items are from Target, Old Navy or Kohl’s. Those are places I shop regularly, have easy and friendly online ordering and returns. I also tend to stick with familiar stores, as I then am confident in how theirs clothes size for my kiddos.  I have highlighted a few of the items and provided a few links as well.

My oldest daughter is going to sleep away sports camp, so she definitely needs a piece of luggage. I like the idea of a rolling duffle. She is big enough that she needs space for clothes but still needs to be able to handle it on her own. I found this one on the pottery barn teen site.

As I said, she’s going to sleep away camp. So the other thing I need to get for her is a few more athletic outfits that fit her well. Right now most of hers are from last year. Most specifically basketball shorts. Have you ever tried to find girls basketball shorts in the girls department?!?  It is virtually non existent. I found these on Kohl’s website. They are Nike’s, but more reasonably priced than I have seen.

Several of the items on the round up are from Target. I love, love, love their athletic line for girls. They have the cutest skort sets! My kids love them, they look nice and they are perfect for the golf course and tennis court and are modest with bike shorts underneath the skirt! They have cute coordinating tops. My girls always get at least 1 set of these every year. They wash and wear great and are pretty good on stains.

Here is an example of my Oldest wearing an activewear outfit from last season (or the year before that).

As you can tell, it is a wee bit short.  I can honestly say that it is still in great shape, she has worn it a zillion times and we will be able to easily pass it down to little sister.

Other Target items are these bike shorts. I love for my girls to wear these with tunics and under dressed as playground pants. They come in a bunch of colors and are downright cheap. Last summer, I bought three colors to go with some of my daughters Lilly Pulitzer tunic dresses that are too short to wear as a dress but still fit her. They are perfect for extending the life of your daughters favorite dresses.

My oldest has broken 4 water bottles this school year. FOUR. I think I have finally found the one that will last. It is double walled coated stainless steel. The ice lasts all day and it doesn’t leak.

We love the phone cord style hair ties. My oldest has come to the point that she likes to put her own hair in a ponytail. These grip the hair and stay put well. These will be perfect for her to take with her to summer sports camp.

Swimsuit. We went on a beach vacay over Thanksgiving, so we don’t really need swimsuits. But I did buy ours at Target when they went on sale after the season. I like 2 pieces for the kids... because really, who wants to deal with wet swimming suit when someone needs to go potty NOW!   I also want something modest and kid looking. I don’t want my 10 year old looking like she’s 15!

The last thing I want to highlight is the headband-visor.  I came across these last year.  I bought one for my oldest daughter for softball. During practice she is always going to fielding mask to batting helmet and a traditional ball cap was just too cumbersome.  This is a super soft and stretchy fabric and is easily packable.  I plan to buy a couple and leave them in various bags all summer.  How perfect are they for tennis camp?!?  I picked mine up at Wal-Mart in store.  I found this one on Amazon.

Valentines Snack Mix

This snack mix is so easy & versatile for any holiday or activity. This is a super kid pleaser. The variety I made is nut free, there is a peanut allergy in my daughters class.  I started with popcorn & pretzels as my base. I popped my popcorn on the stovetop, you could just as easily use pre-bagged popcorn (Smartpop) or microwave popcorn.  I used 8 cups of popcorn and 3 cups of pretzels. Mix in a large bowl. Next, melt your vanilla coating chocolate. Follow the melting instructions on the package.  I dyed mine pink for the occasion.  Once the coating candy is melted and the right color, pour it over your mix. Stir constantly until is all incorporated. Spread out on parchment or wax paper. I used valentines sprinkles next... this is optional... but too cute to pass up! Next, I did the chocolate covered pretzels. I used the remainder of the bag of pretzels.  Same process as before, but using chocolate. Sometimes this is referred t...

Motherhood

Motherhood has the unique ability to expose our deepest weaknesses as well as highlight personal substance you never knew was there. In the trenches of the days of no sleep, spit up covered shirts and endless dirty diapers you discover the deepest part of who you are. One thing I have learned in the last almost 10 years of motherhood, is that knowing who I am is vital to my success. As Americans, I see great fear in understanding one’s own weaknesses. I know the opposite to be true. I see strength in your own full self discovery. We see women that look a certain way and are wearing certain things and we think that we have to imitate that to establish our identity. I see women everyday who are stretched to the brink, trying to do it all. As mothers, it’s important to relay to our children that weaknesses are a part of who we are, we are not defined by those rather we are defined by our strengths. When we truly know who we are, we can feel more comfortable making choices t...

What to wear Wednesday

Does  anyone else have a kiddo that is super picky about clothes???  I have 2...so far.  My oldest is picky about fit and feel, which makes it hard to shop for her.  Up until recently she would say that her biggest enemy in life were ‘jeans & mustard’.... first world problems! But that being said, when you take jeans out of the equation it really limits your outfit options. I mean jeans match everything. I have found the solution!  Target makes a super soft jegging in 3 different washes. She wears, loves and doesn’t complain. Light Wash Adjustable waist. Must have in my opinion for growing kids! They are on sale right now, buy 1 get 1 50%!!! That’s a great deal. You can find them here .
